This is a collection of some of my favorite children's books. Some of these were read to me as a child, some were shown to me by family and friends. But I hope either way you enjoy them and maybe read them to your children!
Picture Books
The Gardner was one of my favorites growing up, I asked that it was read to me almost every night until I was about eight years old. It is beautifully illustrated, tells a tale of independence and is written entirely in letter form to the main characters Grandmother. Here, I've included the description from the back of the book.
Lydia Grace Finch brings a suitcase full of seeds to the big gray city, where she goes to stay with her Uncle Jim, a cantankerous baker. There she initiates a gradual transformation, bit by bit brightening up the shop and bringing smiles to the customers' faces with the flowers she grows. But it is in a secret place that Lydia Grace works on her masterpiece - an ambitious rooftop garden - which she hopes will make even Uncle Jim smile.
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
This is one of the books that I was read to as a child. The meaning of the book is good for kids to learn. If you've read it, it's obviously that you need to give to receive. It also helps them learn what gift they would most like to give.
It is a great story and is also very cute. I really love it and read it to my brother and sister when they were kids. I really love it and if you haven't read this great little book, check it out!
Chapter Books
A Tale of Time City by Diana Wynne Jones
A gift from my great aunt, this book was of the first stories I read on my own. It was very exciting and imaginative and I still sometimes pull it out to read.
The story goes like this; Vivian Smith, a very spirited but nervous 11 year-old, is being evacuated from London in 1939 when she suddenly gets stopped by these two boys who keep calling her "VS." She is not sure how to handle the situation, but they get her bags before she can respond and before she knows it she is travelling into the future and stuck in that realm.
Throughout the story you see how all the children the mature and try to solve the mystery of Time City through the tale everybody knows. But things are soon twisting out of control and by the time the truth is out, it may be too late!
Guys Write for Guys Read edited by Jon Scieszka
When I read this book I was not an immediate fan, the stories all seemed a bit elementary to me. But when I lent it to my brother who was 13 at the time, he loved it. So I thought I would write a review about it for other boys who might want to read it.
This book is a collection of stories by a large group of authors (all men) who tell stories of their childhood and how they came to be who they are.
Some funny, some sad, some just pathetic they are stories that guys can relate to and realize that some of the things in the book they should not do.
Besides stories, there are some illustrators scattered throughout that compare their artwork from then and now.
Forgive the River, Forgive the Sky by Gloria Whelan
This is an incredible story about a girl named Lilly and how she has to cope with the loss of her father and readjust to life without him.
She used to live in a house on the Sandy River with her mom and dad, taking him cups of coffee in the morning while he fished, but when he died it all stopped.
Lilly and her mom had to sell the house, work at the hardware store and take on a lot more responsibility together. Now she has to deal with a man living in their house putting up fences around the land. Now she can't get it to see where she grew up and had memories!

The characters grow a lot and it is a really sweet story about friendship and how sad things can sometimes bring people together.
Treasure in an Oatmeal Box by Ken Gire
This is one of the saddest, but excellent books I've had the pleasure of reading. It really touches my heart and I hope you read it!
Kim and Kevin have just from Texas to a town and have to try to make new friends. For Kim this is easy, but for Kevin it is hard. He is mentally handicapped and has a hard time with normal things. It's furstrating to Kim sometimes, but with the new school and house it is very hard for her.
But beyond all pain and struggle, Kevin is an incredibly strong individual who loves so incredibly hard you can't help but to love him back.
This story is meant for children but can enjoyed by all ages. With a few twists and turns in the story, it really keeps you on the edge of your seat!
River Secrets by Shannon Hale
Part three in the series Books of Bayern, this is a good fantasy. I got to meet the author and get my copy signed, which is pretty cool if you ask me. The book revolves around the character Razo and how he grows up and changes into a man as him and his people have to go on the elite mission on taking their ambassador into their enemy's capital, Tira.
He's the only one in the army that can befriend both the high and low class, the ones that will give him information about the ever-increasing murders. He must embrace his talents and skills to make sure that him and his people get home safe and alive.
Other books in the series include Goose Girl (Book 1), Enna Burning (Book 2) and Forest Born (Book 4). Shannon Hale is also the author of The Princess Academy.
